Global BioForum Newsletter – May 2018

In this first communication, Stetson Family Office is proud to announce the initiation of our Global Bio Newsletter. We are sending this update to you and all the people invited to the January 6, 2016 first Global Bio Forum in San Francisco as well as to the upcoming Global Bio Forum to be held on June 4, 2018 in connection with Bio International in Boston. This second Global Bio Forum is now sold out.  For more information on the goals of Stetson Family Office click here.

First Coast Health Tech Conference in Boston organized by Life Science Nation on September 5 to 7, 2018. Stetson Family Office is a titled sponsor and presenter.  The goal is to assemble all of the 80 or so incubators on the East Coast located between Washington, D.C. and Boston so that the incubators and investors can meet each other. For press release click here.

In the context of our Healthcare Impact Foundation established in 2017, Stetson Family Office has been asked by seven city/regional life science innovation clusters to help them raise evergreen sustainable endowments with an aggregate of $1.2 billion. The understanding with each city/region innovation community is that each of them will raise $30 million from local institutions and family offices to provide critical mass for national donors. SFO will assist in the design and implementation of a workable business plan in order to raise the critical mass and then proceed with helping to raise the rest from its extensive base of contacts. Commitments are coming together as well as business plans.

Bringing together Family Offices around the globe to discuss healthcare. Stetson Family Office has already hosted 10 family office events around the globe in 2018 (up from 5 family office events in 2017– see below).  The goal is to connect Family Offices with local Accelerators and Key Opinion Leaders from their local ecosystems. This helps Family Offices to have reliable and trusted healthcare resources for due diligence in their own community.

The general consensus so far from the meetings with Family Offices around the globe is-
  1. Family Offices like getting together and meeting each other, particularly since they are in the same city/region. There is an opportunity to work more closely together on life science/healthcare.
  2. Philanthropy is an important source of funding for early stage life science innovation and can be very helpful catalyst for the for-profit co-investment by venture capitalists, angels and family offices.
  3. Many cities/regions are interested in creating local accelerators that are sustainable through an evergreen endowment. St. Louis is in the lead in our best-practices league table in terms of operating efficiently a philanthropic accelerator. St. Louis now has 7 years of operational experience and has achieved a 30-to-1 philanthropic leverage: the 60 or so companies that BioGenerator started with a total of $17mln over the last 7 years have managed to raise $520mln of additional for-profit capital from local and other investors.

Healthcare Audio Sponsorship

Stetson Family Office is sponsoring “Better Health at Lower Cost” series of broadcasts and podcasts on “Our American Stories with Lee Habeeb.” The first in the series is on Ken Cooper, M.D. who coined the word “aerobics” fifty years ago. His patients, like Chuck Stetson, who has been going to Dr. Cooper over the last twenty years have documented 40 percent lower cost of healthcare today and 38 percent lower incidence of Alzheimer’s. Dr. Cooper’s patients live on average 10 years longer than other Americans. Stetson Family Office believes that preventive medicine is the key to lowering healthcare costs globally and preserving freedom and democracy.
